Approximately 53% of the rural population in Fiji drink water drawn from creeks and rivers.

While receiving equipment’s for water quality monitoring from World Health Organisation and UNICEF, outgoing Health Minister Jone Usamate revealed this figure saying rural drinking water quality is a major issue of the country and he has come to realize this in over two years as the health minister.

Usamate says water is such a basic necessity for life, a basic necessity for making sure that people can live well and stay well.

Usamate says this initiative by World Organisation and UNICEF is also their response to provision of quality drinking water in Tropical Cyclone Winston affected areas.

He thanked the donors for the equipment’s and says it will be put to good use.
