Police are expected to charge another parent for negligence soon.

This is in relation to a child drowning case.

The first ever case was brought before the courts yesterday with a few other cases now finalized where charges of parental negligence will be laid against the parents of children who have been victims of tragedy.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said a number of files which were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions Office have been returned with sanctioned advice to allow investigators to proceed with charges.

She said Police continue to stress the importance of supervision knowing these tragedies could have easily been avoided with more attention paid on the duty of care by a parent or guardian.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old mother charged with two counts of manslaughter by breach of duty has appeared in the Taveuni Magistrates Court.

It is alleged that last year, Maria Teresia left her two children unattended in her house which caught fire.

The two children died in the house fire.

Teresia has been released on bail to appear in the Labasa Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August.
