Very fine jewellery was also a thing of the ancient past, as confirmed by about 70 researchers carrying out excavations at Bourewa, Sigatoka, a place believed to be one of the earliest human settlements in the Fiji Islands.
The research group, including 38 University of the South Pacific Geography students and led by Professor Patrick Nunn found pottery dating back 3,000 years ago.
Nunn also said the find also shows that USP is at the cutting edge of very fine research.
The 3,000 year old jewellery box was found by Sepeti Matararaba of the Fiji Museum who was also part of the group.
Apart from shell jewellery and the jewellery box, also found were stone tools suggesting that the Lapita people were also fine woodcarvers.
The finds will be given to the Fiji Museum to display.
