Alleged Robbers Denied Bail
Joji Veibau, Apakuki Seru, Maciu Smith and Ronald Jeremiah appeared before Magistrate Anjala Wati and made applications to be released on bail.
Veibau told the court that he was assaulted by Police Officers upon arrest and was not given medical assistance. He added that he sustained serious injuries and needed to see a Doctor.
The other three accused told Court that they needed to consult their lawyers and would abide by strict bail conditions if released on bail.
Police Prosecutor Setereki Savu objected to this saying the offence was serious as it involved a large sum of money, a big portion of which is yet to be recovered.
Savu added that Veibau would be provided with medical assistance while in custody and added that it would be in the interest of the public to remand the four.
Magistrate Wati then denied the four bail saying Veibau had earlier failed to surrender to Police when released for a previous conviction and noted that a large sum of money has not been recovered.
She added that accused persons can get medical assistance while being in the custody.
The plea for Veibau, Seru and Jeremaih has been deferred to the 2nd of June while Smith pleaded not guilty and was represented by legal aid lawyer, Tabibiri Tarere.
