Alleged Asian murderer remanded in custody
The accused, Wang Zhe Pang appeared before Magistrate Kwaindra Nanayakarra this afternoon and was represented by Gavin O'Driscoll.
Pang is alleged to have murdered the Chinese national whose body was found along the Lami seawall last Sunday.
However, no plea has been taken as there was no translator in Court.
O'Driscoll had applied for bail stating that his client had been in custody since Sunday and that the atmosphere at the Korovou Prison or any remand centre was not indusive to conversation as his client did not understand English.
He told the Court that they had a surety present and that if released on bail they had a fixed address where he would reside during the course of the Trial.
However, DPP lawyer Taina Leweni strongly objected to bail saying that they only had the word of the accused that he was a Fiji national and that the offence he is alleged to have committed was very serious.
Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the family of the deceased, Hamendra Nagin told the Court that he had been informed that the accused was arrested at the Nadi International Airport and that he had parents back in China.
Nagin also told the court that the accused when arrested had in his position the passports for both Fiji and China and was a flight risk.
Magistrate Nanayakarra then ruled that the accused be sent for a medical check-up as he had visible injuries and remanded him in custody.
The matter has been transferred to the Suva high Court for the 11th of June for mention.
