The Namosi Joint Venture has stressed that they have followed all regulations and agreed procedures as it explores for gold and copper in the Namosi province.

The venture managed by Newcrest Fiji Limited, in a statement said they are very conscious of the interests of the landowners and have always worked closely with the landowning community.

The comments come after Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni, and members of the Fiji Military Council held talks with the Namosi Copper Mining Company and Namosi landowners, earlier this week to hear out concerns from the mining company and Namosi landowning units.

According to Leweni, the meeting was for both parties as the landowners were concerned with the mine's impact on the environment.

Country manager David Boyd said they have always been careful to act in accordance with correct procedures, regulations and laws and have particular regard to their environmental impact and the agreements they have with landowners.

Boyd has also stressed that contrary to impressions created, there is no mine yet at Namosi, and more exploration was necessary and many geological, economic financial factors had to be considered before decisions could be made on proceeding with construction of a mine.

Leweni said the report is now being compiled and will be submitted to the Prime Minister for his deliberations before further decisions are made.

He added that the visit was fruitful and all issues raised were taken on board.
