All schools in Navua have been told to close this morning due to flooding of some areas in Navua.

Navua Police officer in Charge ASP Jese Unacake said this has been done for the safety of the children as several roads in the area are flooded and the school children could get stranded if the situation worsens this afternoon.

Meanwhile the Education Ministry is calling on school heads to put the safety of children first, and if they know that the rising flood waters will affect the kids, then they should close the schools.

The Ministry said that schools in the Northern and Central Divisions should always remember that the safety of students should be paramount.

Interim Education Minister, Filipe Bole said that with schools closing, children should refrain from playing in floodwaters as taking such risks could be fatal.

School heads are also asked to ensure that the school property is stored safely, and parents have been advised to call schools to check on their children and to confirm whether the schools are closed.
