The All Blacks upped the gears on their World Cup preparations with a 39‑18 win over Argentina in Christchurch last night.

The victory in the Rugby Championship opener was a massive leap from a scrappy 25‑16 win over Samoa last week in Apia though it indicated Steve Hansen’s side still have a lot of work to do if they are to defend the World Cup in two months.

But the hosts took a step forward in their execution while they continued to develop a high‑pace game plan, with captain Richie McCaw, Ma’a Nonu, Charles Piutau, Kieran Read and debutant Codie Taylor all scoring tries.

First five Dan Carter, like McCaw playing his final Test in their home city, appeared more confident at challenging the defensive line, slotting 14 points from the boot.

Meanwhile, a sprained ankle has debutant wing Waisake Naholo, who impressed with his pace and work rate, in doubt for the Test against South Africa next weekend in Johannesburg.

The Wallabies will play Springboks at 10.05 tonight.
