All the Auditor General’s reports from 2007 to date are expected to be released in the first parliamentary sitting as stated by Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama just before the elections.
Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa will head the Public Accounts Committee that will scrutinize all the Auditor General’s reports.
When questioned in our talkback show with Bainimarama and Ro Teimumu just before the elections, Bainimarama made it clear that the government had decided to table the reports to an elected parliament.
Bainimarama also said that FICAC and a new Accountability and Transparency Commission will also look into any discrepancies.
The 2013 constitution states that the Accountability and Transparency Commission shall consist of a Chairperson and two members appointed by the President, on the advice of the Judicial Services Commission following consultation with the Attorney General.
The Chairperson of the Commission must be a person who is qualified to be a judge.
It is stated that a written law shall provide the Commission with the jurisdiction, authority and powers to receive and investigate complaints against Permanent Secretaries and all persons holding a public office.
