The Ministry of Agriculture supports the call by Rewa Rice Chairman, Hari Pal Singh for landowners to utilize their land and plant rice noting the current shortage in the world market.
Singh had earlier called for people who had land that was suitable for rice farming to come forward and plant rice as it would only take three months and this would not only be a way to meet their family needs but a source of income as well.
However, Senior Divisional Officer for Agriculture James Antonio said the Ministry has noted that over the years many farmers have given up hope in planting rice and given up their land which is suitable for rice farming for other purposes.
Antonio adds there are many barriers that hinder people coming forward and one of this is the fact that the price of unpolished rice or commonly known as Paddy is low and is calling on Rewa Rice to increase their price for paddy.
Meanwhile, Antonio adds the Ministry has not put in any immediate plans but may look at subsidizing the industry if they see a lot of people interested in rice farming.
