The students affected by the Closure of the Vatukoula Gold Mines will be getting financial assistance from the Ministry of Education soon.

The Education Minister Netani Sukanaivalu said each affected student in Primary School will get $30 each while $80 each will be given to affected students in secondary schools per month.

The money will be used to provide bus fares and lunches to the affected students. Sukanaivalu said after a survey, 10 schools were identified for assistance as they enroll students whose parents were affected from the closure of the mine.

These schools are Tavua Primary, Natawa Indian, Toko Bhartiya, Vatukoula Convent School, Vatukoula Arya Samaj, Nilsen High School, Tavua District, Vatukoula Primary, Tavua College and Tavua District School.

Sukanaivalu told Cabinet that a total number of 1,538 of the total student population in these schools have been affected. He said the Ba/Tavua Education Office will be responsible for giving out the money.
