Police last night questioned and released 17 human rights activists who were protesting outside the Chinese Embassy at Queen Elizabeth Drive yesterday afternoon.

Those who were taken in for questioning included Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali, Noelene Nabulivou the Coordinator of Women's Action for Change, Edwina Kotoisuva and some other NGO members.

Those taken in for questioning were participating in the peace vigil to show their solidarity with human rights defenders in Tibet and were sighted for alleged unlawful assembly.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kuata Siqila is expected to comment later today.
