Acting Supervisor of Elections appointed
Attorney General and Minister for Justice Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the appointment shows as ongoing commitment by government to have an efficient, transparent and well managed elections office to ensure that the conduct of the general elections shall be managed professionally.
The Acting Supervisor of Elections said the Elections office was currently undergoing a review and planning phase of the anticipated electoral reforms.
He said under these reforms there were three main operational issues that needed to be addressed before the 2014 elections.
Soro Toutou said these include, the compilation of an accurate and reliable voter role that bring confidence to the voters, the planning and administering of the new electoral system, which the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress is recommending, the Proportional Representative List system and finally the establishment of new code of conduct and Ethics for political candidates.
He added that the Elections office had also completed the planning phase of Electronic Voter registration for both National and local government elections, or the establishment of voter rolls with photographs.
He further said currently Fiji is not planning on undertaking electronic voting but rather it is undertaking electronic voter registration that is the creation of a database that will capture voter photographs and fingerprints.
