The ACT Brumbies will fight Henry Speight's dangerous tackle and lifting charges today in a bid to have the Wallabies wing available for their Super Rugby semi‑final against the Hurricanes.

Brumbies chief executive Michael Jones says Speight wanted to clear his name as he felt he did not lift the Stormers captain in the incident that saw him red‑carded.

Speight had the opportunity to plead guilty and accept whatever sanction SANZAR duty judicial officer Nigel Hampton decided on.

But that did not sit well with the quietly‑spoken Fijian flyer and he will try to clear his name at a hearing scheduled today.

Contesting the charges generally means you receive a higher suspension if found guilty than if you simply plead guilty in the first place.

The Hurricanes meet the Brumbies at 7.35pm Saturday while the Waratahs meet the Highlanders at 9.40pm.
