Abstinence theme for teenagers
That is the sentiment from Project Officer for Reproductive Health, Sister Sulueti Duvaga following revelations that there are still instances where minors are allowed into night clubs and students practicing glue sniffing and using drugs.
Though the Ministry is compiling their data for last year, they reveal that in 2008 there were a total of 1186 teenage pregnancy cases compared to 1237 cases in 2007.
Sister Duvaga adds that young people love to experiment and allowing them into nightclubs will lead to dangerous outcomes.
She said though all stakeholders are doing their best to address the issue, at the end of the day, the responsibility lies with the parents.
For the new year, 2010 the Ministry will be adopting the theme of "Abstinence" where they will be roping in the Youth, Social Welfare and Education Ministries in preaching abstinence and responsibility as well as the dangers of abusing alcohol and drugs to tackle teenage pregnancies.
