About 200 people on the island of Qamea have run out of food supplies and clean water following Hurricane Tomas.

Rakesh Chandra who was working with a few villagers, building a seawall on the island told Fijivillage News that many houses have been damaged.

He said he hid under a tray of his truck for a few hours to save himself from strong winds and rain.

Chandra said he then took shelter at a village church with other villagers for over three days until the threat of the hurricane was over.

He said a few villages also received minor injuries from flying debris and children are also getting sick after drinking contaminated water.

According to Chandra all communication on the island has been cut off as villages await food supplies.

Chandra added that he felt lucky as he managed to reach Labasa safely in a boat yesterday.

Chandra said he had fallen sick and is now seeking medical attention at the Labasa hospital.
