AIDS can be stopped - Rao
UN Special Advisor on AIDS in the Asia Pacific region, Doctor Prasada Rao said this as the number of cases continues to rise in the Pacific.
Doctor Rao said the first stage of contracting AIDS would be to contract HIV which if treated properly can be stopped.
Meanwhile, Rao adds that with the increasing number of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) in the region, more focus should be placed on youths.
The Commission on AIDS in the Pacific in their report - Turning the Tide: An open strategy for a response to AIDS in the Pacific, Fiji reported a cumulative total of 290 people suffering from HIV and AIDS with 34 people dying from the disease in the year 2008.
The Report by the Commission, also highlighted that after a close study of reported cases from 1997 to 2007, the number of cases in Fiji is expected to rise on an average of 20.85 cases a year.
