ACS takes charge
ACS saw four gold medals slip from their grasp. We cross over to our News Director Vijay Narayan for the latest.
A number of upsets mark days one. Salote Naiula of Nadarivatu Secondary School took the first Gold medal of the 2009 Coca Cola Games in the Open Girls 1500 metres after creating an upset and beating Noela Taqai of Suva Grammar School who was tipped to win Gold.
Ratu Kadavulevu School from Lodoni won their first gold medal from a major upset in the Senior Boys Shot Put, where Isikeli Seva of RKS beat Jale Vatubua of Marist who was the favorite in the event.
The other upset was created in the Intermediate Girls Long Jump where Vani Tuimoala of St Thomas High School took the Gold, Silver went to Milika Radrotini of ACS and Phyllis Vatucawaqa of Natabua toook the Bronze.
The other upset came in the Senior Girls Triple Jump where Milian Wati of St Thomas took Gold, Silver went to Luisa Dakuwaqa of Xavier College and Bronze went to Alisi Naiteqe of ACS.
Khalsa College from Ba beat favourites ACS and created an upset in the senior girls high jump of the 2009 Coca Cola Games after Teresia Matina claimed Gold, Silver went to Katarina Yabakidua of Gospel High bronze Alesi Nai of Xavier College in Ba.
In the Intermediate Boys Division, looking at the discus throw, Timoci Tuilevu of Ratu Kadavu Levu School from Lodoni claimed another Gold medal, Peofa Tingrea of Marist Brother settled for Silver while Bronze went to Natabua's Nicholas Khan.
In the Senior Boys Long Jump: Isikeli Keli of Tilak High in Lautoka took gold while Ratu kadavulevu's Etuate Tabua took Silver and Bronze Savenaca Degei of Ratu Navula Secondary.
The Intermidiate Girls Shot Put saw another upset with Gold Nailaisa Tagiroa of Saint Joseph Secondary, their first Gold medal, in the 2009 Cokes, Silver going to Natabua's Ema Saunagali and the Bronze going to Loraini Tabuvou of Labasa Muslim College.
Earlier on, In the 100 metres Intermediate Boys heats, Banuve Tabakaucoro also came first with a time of 11.36 seconds. He is confident of a good run in the 100 metres finals this afternoon.
Tabakaucoro beat his closest rival Lepani Naivalu of Suva Grammar who beat him in the Suva Zone 2.
Meanwhile Salote Niulevu of Suva Grammar School recorded a good time in the Senior Girls 100m heats after she finished at 12.63 seconds.
She said she is looking forward to the finals.
The Senior Girls 100 metre record stands at 12.16 set by Makelesi Tumalevu of Suva Grammar School last year.
Suva Grammar School's Boys team captain Remesio Lala claimed their first Gold medal in the 2009 Coca Cola Games after he won the Senior Boys 1500 metres at the TFL stadium this morning.
Lala had a close contest from DAV College who took the Silver and the Bronze went to St Vincent College of Cawaci.
Lala said his Gold medal win in the 1500 metres this morning, is a boost for his side as they aim to successfully defend their title tomorrow.
Lala said he has set the pace and it’s time for the team to deliver.
However, things are not going right for the Suva Grammar School girls camp after their Intermediate Girls 100 metres runner, Mereoni Sinudamu was disqualified in the heats for a break start.
The other upset came in the Senior Girls 1500 metres where Salote Naiula of Nadarivatu Secondary School took gold and beat Noela Taqai of Suva Grammar School in the Senior Girls 1500 metres.
Despite a sad start to their Zone competition, Jasper Williams High School athletes will be taking to the tracks to make sure they win a gold for their teacher who just passed away.
Form Four student, Laisane Rokoiga said before leaving to come to the Cokes, the 24 member squad told the school they would come back with a win in memory of their teacher.
The Lautoka School came third in the Zone games bagging 8 Gold, and 15 silver adding they want to go home with the same result.
Looking at the Legend FM medal tally again, in the Boys division, RKS is leads with 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze, defending champions Suva Grammar is second with 2 Gold and third are Nadarivatu, Tilak, Yet Sen and Nakauvadra with 1 Gold each.
In the Girls division, in first place is St Thomas with 2 Gold, defending champions ACS is second with 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze, and third is Nadarivatu, LMS and Bucalevu with 1 Gold each.
Eight gold medals are also at stake on the tracks in the 100 metres from 6 o’clock tonight and another eight are at stake from 6:30 this evening when the 400 metres finals kick off.
