966 cases of sexual offences were recorded for the year 2009.
This was revealed by the Fiji Police Force Sexual Offences Unit at the symposium on elimination of sexual offences and domestic violence yesterday at the Studio Six Hotel in Suva.
Officer in charge Inspector Linieta Navonu in her presentation highlighted that 90 percent of victims are women and children, and that 50 percent are abused by their own family members.
Navonu highlighted that a major cause of sexual offences among children is parental negligence.
Meanwhile, SSP Director for Strategic Planning Ravi Narayan said the symposium is very important as it provides a platform for various stakeholders to address the issue.
