Around $84 million is owed to the Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) in taxes as of last year.
That is the revelation from CEO Jitoko Tikolevu when asked by Fijivillage as to how much is owed to the Authority.
Tikolevu said they hope to bring this figure down by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, addressing the Fiji Indigenous Business Council this week, he revealed that their total tax revenue collection grew by 0.8 percent in 2008 compared to that in 2007, adding that the tax revenue collection over the last 4 years has seen a positive growth.
He stressed that the positive growth over the last two years is in contrast to the declining economic performance for the same period.
Jitoko stressed that those businesses and people who owe money in taxes know that strict penalties are in place.
