You do not have to be blind to appreciate and value good eyesight.
This is the message from the Chief Executive Officer of the Pacific Disability Forum, Setareki Macanawai who lost his vision while studying in Form six.
While speaking at the 2009 World Sight Day celebration this morning at the Home of Compassion in Tamavua, Macanawai stressed that 80% of blindness is avoidable as it is treatable, curable or preventable.
The World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness, vision impairment and rehabilitated persons.
This event is also the main advocacy event for the prevention of blindness and for "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight" which is a global effort to prevent blindness created by the World Health Organisation and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.
