An 8 year old girl has died while her 10 year old brother is fighting for his life at Korovou Hospital after they got washed away by strong currents while swimming in the Wainibuka River.

The victim was swimming with her elder brother and another girl yesterday when she started to find difficulty in swimming and got hold of her brother who tried to take her to the main land but was unsuccessful.

The villagers were alerted and a search was conducted where the girl's body was found after two hours, about 20 metres away from where they were swimming. She was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

It is believed that the two who are from Nakasi went to attend a Fijian Traditional ceremony with their parents when the incident occurred.
