Fiji loses an estimated $78 million to Anemia each year.
Those are the words of chief dietician for the Health Ministry Nisha Khan addressing Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma and other health officials at a conference on flour fortification.
Nisha added that the survey conducted in 2004 was conducted at garment factories around the country and this shows the need to ensure stricter laws for importers of flour.
Since 2004, flour manufacturers have been mixing iron to fortifying the products as this is the most used staple food in the country.
According to the Health Ministry, all flour sold in the country should have a minimum of 2 grams of iron mixed with the flour before it is sold to the general public.
