A 6-year-old student of Marist Brothers Primary School in Suva has passed away after he was hit by a bus outside his school at Suva Street at about 7.45 this morning.
It is alleged that the Year 1 student was crossing in front of the bus when he got hit.
Eyewitnesses removed the boy from under the bus and he had visible head injuries.
Police say the driver is in custody and the post mortem will be conducted tomorrow.
Meanwhile questions are being raised on why there are no school patrols outside the school as the students have to cross the road.
Fijivillage understands that Education Ministry policies state that teachers have to be on duty for school traffic patrol with senior students to ensure that incoming and outgoing students are safe.
When asked why there were no teachers’ patrol this morning, the school referred all questions to the headteacher who was not in the office today.
The Assistant Headteacher says that the incident happened outside the school, and Police and parents are dealing with the issue.
Daniel Nalovo who works at a warehouse in High Street says there have been no teachers or police road patrols along the area since school started this year.
Nalovo says he witnesses students crossing the road without any supervision, when he is on his way to work at about 7.30 every morning.
