60 people have been charged with sedition in three separate matters so far.

The Director of Public Prosecutions charged another 16 people with sedition and inciting communal antagonism yesterday.

Ratu Inoke Tasere, Jimi Koroibete, Seru Kunalagi, Adi Cuvu Gavidi Atama, Ulaiasi Tuivono, Peniasi Naqau, Semi Tanikili, Ratu Osea Bolawaqatabu, Ratu Tevita Makutu, Mosese Navaci, Eroni Rikoriko, Alifereti Nakuinivou, Alifereti Gonewai, Raicula Rokovou, Adi Vasemaca VGonewai and Jorama Ratulevu have been remanded in custody by the Nadi Magistrates Court.

The charge follows an investigation by Police into certain activities by a group of individuals in the Nadroga‑Navosa district last year.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde says at this stage there is no evidence to suggest this matter is related to the other group from Ra that was also charged with sedition last month and nor are these matters related to members of an alleged para‑military style training group that have also been charged with sedition.

Meanwhile, six people have been charged with one count of sedition and one count of urging political violence.

Salimoni Serau, Penasio Manasa Luqa, Joseva Caucau, Isireli Serewai, Rokoua Duatini and Filimoni Naloga have been remanded in custody.

The Defence counsel requested for bail but was informed by the court to make a formal application.

The State asked for all six to be remanded in custody due to the seriousness of the charges and continuing Police investigations into the use of firearms.

The matter has been adjourned to the 26th of this month to be called at the Rakiraki Magistrates Court.

Another three people charged with sedition and inciting communal antagonism also appeared in the Tavua Magistrates Court yesterday.

Timoci Nagata, Pita Vakatawa and Saimoni Nacolawa were allegedly involved in military style training up in the hills of Ra.

The defence counsel made a bail application for Nacolawa citing medical grounds.

The court informed the defence that it needs to make a formal bail application since the court had not granted him leave to apply for bail.

The defence counsel then requested for a court order allowing Nacolawa to be taken for medical examination.

This has been granted.

All accused persons have opted for a High Court trial.

The matter has been transferred to the Lautoka High Court for mention on the 1st of next month.

The three have been further remanded in custody.
