Six players will make their debut for the Highlanders tonight when they take on defending Super Rugby champions the Chiefs.

Three players will make their first run-on start which include Tony Woodcock, Joe Wheeler and Ma’a Nonu while Liam Coltman, Hayden Parker and Japan halfback Fumiaki Tanaka will come off the bench. 

All Blacks Legend, Brad Thorn who is now with the Highlanders has been ruled out due to a calf strain.

Meanwhile two Fijians will feature for the defending Super Rugby champions the Chiefs tonight.

Patrick Osborne will make his debut on the right wing while Asaeli Tikoirotuma will wear the number 11 jumper.

Coach Dave Rennie said it’s good to finally start the competition and knows the team has been training hard and are looking forward to getting stuck into it, especially the new caps.

Injuries has also forced Rennie to name a new look backline for the clash.

Andrew Horrell, Robbie Robinson, Brendon Leonard and Richard Kahui are out due to injury.

The Highlanders will host the Chiefs at 6.35pm tonight and the Rebels will take on the Brumbies at 8.40pm.

Tomorrow at 6.35pm, the Hurricanes will play the Blues while the Waratahs and Reds match kicks off at 8.40pm.
