This festive season, when people are having a good time with their family and friends, six families around the country are mourning the loss of their loved ones, who lost their lives due to accidents and drowning, over the last four days.

In the early hours of Christmas morning, a 21-year-old security officer lost his life after the car he was traveling in veered off the road and hit a post in Yako, Nadi.

Later that night, in Yasayasa, Tavua, a 27-year-old man lost his life when he was hit by a van driven by a 34-year-old who was heading towards Ba.

On Boxing Day, a 27-year-old man of Nasole died instantly after he was hit by two taxis while crossing the road.

The road death toll now stands at 53 compared to 46 for the same period last year.

And two people lost their lives in separate drowning incidents over Christmas.

A 32-year-old man who was drunk drowned in the Wainivula River near the Bailey Bridge on Sunday while a 15-year-old boy drowned in Vatukoula while swimming with his friends and family.

Meanwhile, on Christmas Eve, a 26-year-old man of Dakuibeqa Village in Beqa went outside to switch on the family generator when he was electrocuted and died.
