A total of 6 Melanesians are currently being detained at the Korovou Prison awaiting deportation after it was found that they have been staying in the country illegally.

Director Immigration Nemani Vuniwaqa confirmed that there are 2 Vanuatu Nationals, a Solomon Islander and 3 Papua New Guinea nationals who were arrested last week and this week on Monday.

The 6 were in the country on student visas which had expired in 2008.

Vuniwaqa said 2 Vanuatu nationals and the Solomon Islander were arrested from a flat in Waimanu Road, 2 PNG brothers were arrested from a flat in Muanikoso 7 miles while another PNG national was arrested on the streets of Suva.

Immigration officials approached the PNG national and demanded his passport where it was then established that his visa had expired.

The 6 will be deported to their countries on the next available flight.
