The end of the Christmas long weekend turned into tragedy last night as a 5 year old boy and his mother died after they were trapped inside their burning house in Naitalasese, Bau Road Nausori.
The National Fire Authority has confirmed that they received an emergency call at 11.20pm and fire trucks were dispatched immediately.
By the time the firefighters arrived the house was fully engulfed in flames.
There were three people inside the house.
The husband, wife and their 5 year old child.
The husband managed to escape while his wife and son were trapped inside.
Fijivillage visited the site this morning and a neighbor Mary Levi who has been living in the area for nine years said the whole community is in shock.
According to Levi, her uncle Peni Tukai raised the alarm when he saw smoke coming out of the house but they could not save the mother and child.
Officers from the Police Forensic team and investigators from the National Fire Authority are still at the scene conducting investigation.
