The Fiji Roads Authority says they are currently focusing on opening roads and restoring access then repairing potholes.

In a press conference this afternoon, FRA’s CEO John Hutchinson revealed that there were over 386 road closure incidents

between 18th and 22nd December this year and efforts are still underway to restore access in some areas of the Central and Western Division.

Talking about potholes which has become a major concern for motorists particularly between the Suva-Nausori corridor, Hutchinson said 11,000 potholes have been filled and they estimate a further 50,000 potholes on the roads as a result of the Tropical Depression.

He says they currently have 15 work crews in the Central Division, 14 in the Western and 11 work crews in the North.

He says their contractors have been working non-stop since the 16th of this month and most will be working through the festive season.

Hutchinson has also highlighted that Fiji’s drainage network needs major improvement which is a contributing factor to the increasing potholes.

He says the work crews around Suva over the next 48 hours will focus on patching potholes on Fletcher road, Mead road, Grantham road, Khalsa road, Waimanu road, Amy street, Robertson road, Gordon street, Queens road and Nausori bypass road.

Hutchinson has also defended their action where they are patching some potholes during rainy weather.

FRA says the estimated cost for repairs currently stands at $8.6 million.

He says they will defiantly get the funding for these repairs and this will mean that some road projects may get deferred.
