The Water Supply Department has revealed that as a result of old pipes still in use today, 50% of water pumped through the system is lost through leaks.
Divisional Engineer Sereicokocoko Yanuranurua said some of the old pipes which have been in place for the past 40-50 years are beyond their use and that is why they are carrying out their leak detection program.
Yanuyanurua added they are awaiting funds to carry out the replacement of pipes and in the meantime they have stepped up their detection program.
Yanuyanurua said they are concentrating on the areas that need to be addressed to ensure there are no water disruptions.
