5 men sentenced to 4 years imprisonment
Rupeni Mocei, Esala Delana, Sakiusa Talemailodoni, Sialeni Temo and Simione Nabeca belonged to a faction in the village that opposed the 72 year old deceased who was a claimant to the traditional title of "Buli Ravi-ravi" in the Tikina of Vuya. This title is a high-ranking chiefly title in Nabouwalu village.
The court heard on the 25th September 2007, the deceased learned that the bamboo posts he had arranged to build sheds for his installation ceremony had been destroyed by another faction.
The deceased was angry and swore at those who destroyed the bamboo posts and they threw stones at the village hall where the five accused were having a meeting.
Meanwhile the five accused retaliated and punched the deceased and struck him with a bamboo stick. He died as a result of the injuries incurred from the attack.
High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Gounder sentenced the five to four years imprisonment for manslaughter, saying society cannot condone any act of violence that leads to the loss of human life.
