Five students have been charged in relation to the alleged assault of a Year 13 student at Queen Victoria School.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirms that the 5 QVS students have been charged with assault and will appear in the Korovou Magistrates Court today.
Police are also investigating the allegations levelled against a teacher and senior prefects who assaulted another Year 13 student at Queen Victoria School.
Serious concerns have been raised on the alleged assaults and bullying of students by some senior prefects and a teacher at QVS for some time.
Minister for Education, Doctor Mahendra Reddy has stated that they are conducting an investigation and such incidents will not be tolerated.
Naisoro says they have received two complaints regarding the alleged assaults at QVS - one at Korovou Police Station and the second from Lami Police Station.
She says one of the reports alleges that a teacher was also involved in the assaults.
The second case is still under investigation.
Meanwhile the Human Rights and Anti‑Discrimination Commission is also looking into a complaint in relation to alleged student beatings at QVS.
The Commission met with one of the students yesterday and will now as part of its investigations conduct interviews with school administrators, Ministry of Education officials, students and the parents.
Commission Director, Ashwin Raj says that they take these allegations very seriously as it concerns the rights of the child guaranteed under the Constitution, constitutes a breach of the Child Protection Policy and that corporal punishment in schools has been abolished.
