43 gold medals at stake on day one
20 gold medals will come from the track events while 23 are up for grabs in the field events.
The first medal is in the open girls’ 1500 metres final where last year’s defending champion and Nadarivatu=s golden girl Salote Naiulu will out to defend her title from ACS runner Akesa Drotini who she dethroned last year.
Also running in this event is Suva Grammars Noela Taqai who won the gold medal in the Suva Zone 2 competition.
In the field events the finals of the intermediate boy’s javelin will start at 9.40am where Marist Brothers High School is expecting gold and silver from Jone Volitilau and Pauliasi Vakawaletabua.
The 100 metres heats will begin at 10.37am with the senior boys starting at 11.37am where the likes of Banuve Tabakaucoro, Mataiasi Savou, Niko Radiva and Isoa Me will run in their respective heats.
The 100 metres final will start at 6pm followed by the 400 metres finals at 6.35pm.
100 metres favourite, Banuve Tabakaucoro said he is ready to break the 17 year old record set by QVS Viliame Nasuku in 1993.
His father, Ratu Jo Tabakaucoro said his son is expecting tough competition in his first year in the senior grade.
The 2010 Coca Cola games will be officially opened by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at 9am.
The first event of the day in the field event will start at 9am in the intermediate boy’s javelin, while in the track the open girls 1500 event starts at 9.45am.
