Good news for 40 registered unemployed citizens, who have gone through training at the National Employment Center, that they will now have work attachment with the Bank of South Pacific for six months before being considered for permanent employment after an assessment.

Employment opportunities in Fiji took a historic step forward with the signing of a Memorandum Of Understanding between the National Employment Center and the Bank of the South Pacific in Suva today.

The signing was done between Labour and Employment Minister, Filipe Bole and BSP Fiji boss, Kevin McCarthy.

Bole said he is happy that the Bank of the South Pacific has taken the first step as there is a statutory requirement for every employer in Fiji with more than 50 workers, they have the social corporate responsibility to promote employment by engaging simply qualified unemployed persons on a ratio of at least 5 per cent of the total number of workers employed by the employer.

There are more than 8,000 unemployed people registered under NEC training programmes.

The target is to register 10,000 people by the end of the year.
