357 civil servants will be retiring this year.

This has been confirmed by Permanent Secretary for the Public Service Commission Pramesh Chand.

He said based on requirements and the skill needs of respective Ministries, Departments and Agencies, flexibility will be maintained to re-engage those that are beyond the retirement age of 55 years, but on a case by case basis.

According to Chand, it is part of the Civil Service Reforms to contain the size of the civil service and also provide opportunities for younger graduates to join the civil service, thus boosting efficiency.

Last year a total of 2,231 employees retired, with 292 re-engaged to ensure continuity of service in respective Ministries and Departments.

The Retirement Policy is in place as per provisions of the State Service Decree 2009.
