Fiji’s cinema giants Damodar Brothers last night officially launched a Damodar City project in Raiwai Raiwaqa which will house a four screen cinema, supermarket and a variety of shops upon completion by early next year.
The $30 million Damodar City project was officially launched by Attorney General and Public Enterprises Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday.
Damodar Brother’s Chief Executive Officer Div Damodar said the aim of the City will be to provide and service every form of public demand.
The project is a result of a joint venture partnership between Dayanand Damodar and Alistair Hutchinson.
Hutchinson is an investor in the country through his Federal Pacific Group which employs more than 120 staff.
He has also served on the board of the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
Speaking at the launch last night, Attorney General and Minister for Trade Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the reality now is that there is urbanization within cities itself and services are needed to be made more closer to people’s home.
He added the residents in the Laucala Bay and Raiwaqa area will now also have more amenities to choose from adding that the Complex is ideally located given the location of the TFL National Stadium as well as McDonalds and other institutions.
Project partner Damodar Brothers is the largest Cinema franchise in Fiji and has been in the film industry for close to 50 years.
Besides cinema, the company currently has investments in hotel accommodation and the “Nandos” food franchise.
The Damodars started off the cinema business back in 1962 after their textile import and export business moved to Suva from Rakiraki in 1950.
It started off as a small Rakiraki based shop and is now a significant commercial enterprise in Fiji.
The project is already underway and is expected to be completed by April next year and 700 jobs are expected to be created through the project.
