The 30 day time frame for all telephone and mobile phone users to register with the phone companies starts from tomorrow.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirmed that the date has been determined by him as the Minister responsible and telephone users should follow what is stated in the Compulsory Registration of Customers for Telephone Services Decree.
Under the decree, service providers shall require all customers to provide the name and date of birth, permanent home address or address in Fiji if visiting, photo identification and parent or guardian's signature if the customer is below 18 years of age.
It has been made clear that telephone services for users who do not register within the 30 day time frame will be suspended as stated in the decree.
Under the decree a service provider who fails to cancel communications services within two weeks after the expiry of the time frame for each telephone number which has not been registered at that date shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of $200,000.
It is also stated that a service provider must suspend services to a dormant telephone number immediately upon it becoming dormant.
Registered customers for a SIM Card or fixed line telephone must inform the relevant service provider of any change to registration details under the decree, immediately upon such change taking place.
Anyone who breaches this shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of $10,000 or imprisonment for 6 months.
