Three cases involving parental negligence have been prosecuted and sentenced so far this year while 3 cases remain with the courts.

This has been confirmed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

In the first case, the parents of a one year, four month old baby were handed a 24 month prison sentence which was suspended for 2 years by the Suva High Court.

The court heard that the one year, four month old boy was found floating in a creek in a village in Nausori in February last year.

In another incident, a 24 year old father was handed a suspended sentence by the Lautoka High Court for the charges of manslaughter due to breach of duty.

He was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment suspended for 3 years.

On the 20th of July last year, he slept on his four month old baby as he was drunk.

The four month old baby was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Sigatoka hospital.

Also the Labasa High Court sentenced a mother to 24 months imprisonment suspended for three years after she left her two children aged 4 and 2 years alone in a house which caught fire two hours later.

The woman was nine months pregnant at the time of the incident.

According to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, manslaughter arising from a breach of duty attracts a maximum sentence of 25 years.
