Three Sri Lankan Resident Magistrates have resigned.

The Acting Chief Magistrate Pamila Ratnayake and two Presiding Magistrates Kaweendra Nanayakkara and Lakmal Wickramasooriya handed in their resignation to the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Sayed-Khaiyum said that the Resident Magistrates had their personal reasons for resigning.

He also revealed that seven new Magistrates will be sworn-in in the coming weeks and five of these would-be Magistrates who are Fijians, one Australian and one New Zealander.

He said the court proceedings will not be affected in any way and in fact the capacity would be increased given in particular the appointment of seven new Magistrates.  

Sayed-Khaiyum added there will also be further Expressions of Interest called for interest in the Bench.
