There are a total of 259 HIV and AIDS cases in the country.

This was confirmed in a report submitted by the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS which said that from 1989 up until December 2007, Fiji had passed the slow burning stages of the disease and was now in the escalating phase.

According to the United Nations General Assembly Special Section on HIV and AIDS or UNGASS Report, Fijians are the predominantly affected racial group - totaling 81% of those affected - with 51% being male, and 45% being youths between the ages of 20 - 29.

Ministry of Health Media Liaison Officer Vasiti Ritova confirmed this saying that for last month alone there were 6 new reported cases of the disease alone.
