As of the 15th of October this year, there are currently 232 offenders at the Korovou Prison.

Looking at the breakdown of this number, 24 are from Tailevu, 22 from Lau, 19 from Naitasiri and Kadavu and 14 with Lomaiviti and Cakaudrove.

Of the 232 offenders at Korovou, there are 164 Fijians, 47 Indians, 1 Part European, 4 Chinese, 3 Rotumans and 13 of other races.

Speaking on behalf of the vanua during the Pacific Islands Correction Conference Ratu Filimone Ralogaivau said Fijian offenders instead of being sent to prison, should be sent back to the village where they are given tasks to do around the village to bring back a sense of respect for themselves, their family and village.

Tailevu Provincial Council Chairman Josefa Serulagilagi had earlier said that it’s a serious concern that should be discussed during their provincial council and tikina meetings.
