Figures released by the Sugar Cane Growers Council reveals that 2,271 ALTA land leases have expired in Vanua Levu since 1st January 1997.

According to the figures compiled by the Sugar Cane Growers Council out of the 2,271 ALTA leases that have expired till 29th of October this year, only 927 have been renewed.

The figures also reveal that majority of the leases that have been renewed, have been given to new tenants who had to start sugar cane farming from scratch.

This has led to the dramatic decline in the sugar production in the last few years as many of the farmers whose leases has expired have moved away from Labasa.

When contacted this morning the Interim Agriculture Minister Joketani Cokanasiga referred all queries to the NLTB who is expected to comment later this morning.
