Suva Magistrate Amani Rokotinaviti today sentenced a 21 year old charged with robbery with violence to 18 months imprisonment suspended for 12 months.

The court heard that on 23rd June, 2006, Tevita Vakatalai robbed 31 year old Michael Taylor in Suva.

While Taylor was walking with his friend, Vakatalai stopped the taxi he was on and robbed Taylor of his reading glass, house key and mobile phone worth more than $500.

In mitigation, Vakatalai told the court that he was 21 years old and married, was drunk at the time and did not know what was happening.

He admitted to 12 previous convictions and wants to return to his village in Gau.

Magistrate Rokotinaviti said that he is satisfied that Vakatalai can reform and in view of the Yellow Ribbon approach should be given a chance, and therefore sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment suspended for 12 months.
