Over 202 cases of fraud and organized crime were recorded by the Fiji Intelligence Unit last year.

Director FIU Razim Buksh said majority of the 202 cases involved funds that were proceeds of criminal activity such as forgery, illegal gambling, false pretense and organized crime.

According to an FIU estimate, Fiji loses $100 million of which close to $34 million each year is lost due to Tax Evasion or even money hidden from Authorities to evade tax.

Buksh also added Fiji in particular has been a victim of money laundering over the past 10 years and with the recent establishment of FICAC and of FIU, a lot of cases have been successfully prosecuted, a major case being the $1 billion drug bust in Laucala Beach in 2004, where perpetrators were brought to justice.

Meanwhile, interim Minister for Justice Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said after a survey last year, Fiji had been ranked by the World Bank as a country that has strong Anti-Corruption laws especially following the setting up of FICAC.
