The 2009 Pacific Mini Games has finally started in the Cook Islands.

Sports that are currently underway are Golf, Lawn Bowls and Squash while Athletics, Boxing, Netball, Weightlifting and Table Tennis to start later in the day.

The main event in the athletics competition today will be the 100m heats in both the men’s and women’s divisions where our medal prospects Niko Verekauta, Banuva Tabakaucoro and Makelesi Bulikiobo will be competing.

The only finals where medals will be at stake will be in the women's Discus and Javelin Throw and 5,000m steeple chase and in the men's 3000 metres steeple chase.

The 100m heats will start at 1:10pm today.

In the Netball competition, Fiji who will be defending the gold medal will take on Tonga in their opening match today at 12pm.

Meanwhile, Fiji Sprint Queen Makelesi Bulikiobo is aiming to bring back gold medals not just one, at the 8th Pacific Mini Games which kicks off at the BCI stadium in the Cook Islands today.

The Suva Grammar School teacher said that she aims to win 5 gold this time around.
