A $1 million application has been forwarded to the Prime Minister's relief fund by the National Disaster Management Office for the cartage of water to drought affected areas.
Permanent Secretary for Provincial Development, Manasa Vaniqi said that the request was in response to the prolonged dry spell experienced throughout the country which had left many communities, especially those in the rural areas, without water for many weeks.
He said the water supply unit and divisional commissioners were working to ensure water supply reached all affected areas.
He has also urged all parties to give their contributions at their next stakeholders meeting due to the seriousness of the problem.
Meanwhile, the Water Authority of Fiji has supplied water to islands in southern Lau, in Yasawa and the Mamanuca Islands, Sigatoka areas and in the North Batiri in Seaqaqa, Sawani and Solevu in Bua.
