Rape continues to be a serious concern in our society.

There have been 170 sexual offence cases reported between May to September this year.

Latest statistics revealed by the Director of Public Prosecutions shows that there were 11 separate incidents of rape in the last month alone.

There were 4 victims in these cases.

One was 12 years old, one was 13 years while two of the victims  were over the age of 18 years.

According to the DPP, 5 people have been charged for the 11 separate cases.

Meanwhile two cases were discontinued before the courts after discontinuances were filed for two rape matters.

Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator, Shamima Ali says it is good that the statistics are coming out but we need further analysis of why some cases are discontinued.

Ali says we also need to look at areas where we need to further strengthen reporting of cases and the whole legal process.
