The interim government has revealed that it has used over $1.5 million to assist 1604 redundant workers of Vatukoula Gold Mine.
Part of the assistance is in the form of educational assistance by the Ministry of Education for the children of the ex-miners who are in primary and secondary schools.
The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Employment Opportunities and Productivity Manager Viliame Baledrokadroka said the redundant Vatukoula gold miners are fortunate to have been provided assistance by government.
He said the assistance is separate from the $9.5 million that the Emperor Gold Mine had given workers as redundancy packages on the 20th of February this year.
This follows criticism from various NGOs who claimed that the redundant miners have not been assisted by the interim government despite the promises made when the mines were shut down.
