Concern has been expressed by the Interim Minister for Health at the data released by the Ministry which shows a total of 1517 teenage pregnancy cases were reported for the year 2006 alone.

In an interview with Fijivillage news, Doctor Jiko Luveni said that the figure is a huge reflection on the decline in society and parents need to look into the issue.

Luveni also said that parents as well as leaders need to understand that the scenario has many contributing factors one of which is poverty.

According to the Hospital Discharge Data, over a three year period from 2004 - 2006, the major age group which were affected most was the 15 - 19 years age group.

Fiji Womens Crisis Centre Co-odinator, Shameema Ali said these figures are indeed a grave concern.
